Congressional Solar Energy Tax Credit Bill Creates Affordable Renewable Energy Systems for Homeowners

  

A part of the bailout package recently passed by the U.S. government included a generous solar energy tax credit bill which will dramatically reduce the cost and hasten the payback to homeowners for installing residential solar energy systems. A full 30% federal tax credit is now available for solar PV and thermal installations starting January 1, 2009. The Renewable Energy Division of S+H Construction, Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the greater Boston area’s premier residential renovation and custom home building companies, designs, integrates and installs solar electric power (PV), solar thermal hot water, and geothermal heating and cooling systems.

$1800 used shipping container as architects' backyard office

Shipping containers are built to carry huge loads and the refrigerated units are very efficient at climate control. So it’s unsurprising that when they’re retired from the sea, they’re being used as the building blocks for homes and offices.

“You can put 60,000 pounds in them and then stack them 8 high and then put them on a ship,” explains architect Karl Wanaselja. “They're incredibly strong so they're way stronger than a house ever needs to be so in earthquake country they're a good building block”.

Given their strength they work well in earthquake country. In Berkeley, California Wanaselja and his business partner and wife Cate Leger created their home-office using a shipping container. It cost just $1800.

"The Port of Oakland has hundreds of these things left over. What happens is after they've been around the world I don't know how many times they get dinged up and get holes in them and sometimes they get dropped and there's a certain number of patches they're allowed to have before they no longer meet the international shipping standard and so when they're at that point they get retired and then sold off.”

Wanaselja and Leger cut their 40 foot long refrigerated unit in half and placed it in a T shape in their backyard (with the help of a crane). They didn’t need to add any insulation: they’re designed to not have any thermal bridging between the interior and exterior and the polyisocyanurate insulation (a plastic, but it came with the container) has the highest R-value of any foam insulation.

Using a sawzall (reciprocating saw), the couple cut huge windows into the aluminum/stainless steel structure. Wanaselja says he was initially intimidated by the idea of crafting out of aluminum (the exterior material) and stainless steel (interior), but “once I got over my learning curve I actually like working with metal”.

In this video, the couple talk about working in a cargo container, using materials like the soy-based plywood floor (Purebond) and the music made by rain and branches on a metal roof.

I think this is a very good example of a Container Home. Using the steel beams as your support structure is tremendously stronger than any wood frame. No worry about the weather or Termites.  Maybe I am a redneck.

I've looked at countless sites on container homes and frankly, you stand head and shoulders above the rest in terms of design, vision, and creative ability. I'm interested in doing a road trip this winter with my family in our bus, and was wondering if you might have work for me for a few weeks or a month or two. I'm interested in getting into container homes and would love to learn a thing or two about metal and such. I'm not looking for big wages, just a way to offset the cost of being away from my own business and on the road. I am an american citizen and was actually born in Texas, if it makes a difference. 10 Things to Consider in Using Shipping Containers for Your Next Project

Modern day pioneer John Wells is doing some interesting work in Alpine, Texas.  On his desert swath in The Field Lab, which is also referred to as The Southwest Texas Alternative Energy and Sustainable Living Field Laboratory, Wells is living off the grid and maintaining an interesting (and humorous) journal in the process. 

A couple years ago, he built a tiny house, which is powered by 270 watts of solar and four 100-watt small wind turbines.  Now, Wells' current project is the construction of a live/work space made from four 20-foot shipping containers.  Wells hopes to finish his 1,600 square-foot space for less than $20,000 and has some helpful pointers for others looking to take on a container project. 

In mostly Wells' words, here are 10 things to consider if you're thinking about using shipping containers in your next project:

1. Even with all the hype, containers are difficult to obtain and expensive to ship long distances. If you live close to a major port city and have a really big truck and trailer, it's much easier and far cheaper to get them.

2. Don't bother with those websites that have you fill out your info and up to four suppliers will contact you with competitive prices - THEY WON'T!

3. The price for a 20' shipping container (not including delivery) can range from $2500 to $4000. You can stick build a building with the same amount of square footage, that is just as water tight and structurally sound using traditional construction methods for less than the cost of a shipping container - it just won't weigh as much.

4. Containers provide an extremely secure storage structure which requires a blow torch or dynamite to break into, and they are too heavy to walk off with.

5. If possible, get delivery by tilt bed roll off truck. Otherwise you need a small crane or huge forklift to move and position them - or at least 50 really strong men.  Watch your fingers!  A 20' shipping container weighs almost 5000 lbs.

6. Rust is the only natural predator that can harm a shipping container, so don't scrimp on a good paint job.

7. These metal monsters become ovens or freezers depending on the outside temperature, really good insulation and ventilation is a MUST!

8. The real bonus to using a shipping container is the new green phrase "adaptive reuse." Our trade deficit with the rest of the world is causing these to pile up in our country.

9. If you are going to use one for a structure, stay true to the form. Don't cover the exterior with other building materials - show it for what it is.

10. While searching the web for how containers are being used: (A) most sites only show computer renderings, and (B) actual completed structures have been built at astronomical cost.
